A method and an apparatus for improving a backlight image by altering a gamma knee point in a CMOS(Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) sensor are provided to correct the backlight image by changing a dynamic range of the CMOS image sensor through gamma knee point correction of the backlight image, thereby achieving noise reduction, expression improvement, power consumption reduction and temperature deterioration at the backlight image. A method for improving a backlight image comprises the following steps of: detecting an image signal from a CMOS(Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) image sensor(203); setting a center area and a peripheral outline area(206); measuring a brightness value of the set center area and a brightness values of the peripheral outline area; comparing the two brightness values, and recognizing a part of the center area as a backlight image if the brightness value of the center area is darker than the brightness value of the peripheral outline area and the brightness value difference is present within a preset certain range(209); correcting a luminance value of the recognized backlight image through gamma knee point correction(212); and displaying the image signal, where the gamma knee point correction is performed, as an image(215). |
