PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the illuminate efficiency of a display device having a flat display structure formed by superposing a display panel of a plasma address type and a back light for illuminating this panel from its rear surface on each other. SOLUTION: The display panel 1 has an upper substrate 6 formed with signal electrodes 7 in a column form, an intermediate substrate 5 joined to this upper substrate 6 via a prescribed spacing and guest-host liquid crystals 9 held in the spacing therebetween. The panel has a lower substrate 10 forming discharge channels 16 of a row form joined to the intermediate substrate 5 via a prescribed space. The back light 2 has a light transmission plate 21 which is integrated to the lower substrate 10 and has a total reflection condition and a fluorescent lamp 22 which is disposed at the end of this light transmission plate 21 and introduces illumination light. The lower substrate 10 has a light scattering surface 25 disturbing the total reflection condition within the respective discharge channels 16 and locally leads the illumination light from the light transmission plate 21. |
