A collar (1) for use in closing a can so as to enable the can (10) to be closed by a screw or twist-off style of closure (20). The collar (1) has channels (7) on its inner wall which extend from one end of the collar (1) to the other to provide continuous venting, and castellations (9) around one edge. When fitted to a necked can (10), the collar (1) is retained by an outward curl (11) at the free edge of the neck of the can (10). This curl (11) is typically about 0.5 mm in radius and is fully closed up. When high internal pressures are imposed in a closed container, for example by a carbonated beverage, the castellations (9) embed in the tight curl (11), preventing both opening of the curl (11) and spinning of the collar (1). |
