PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for realizing the advantages of a standard HCCI process while overcoming internal disadvantages and demerits of both of a pure four-stroke HCCI engine and a pure two-stroke HCCI engine. SOLUTION: This system comprises a step for detecting a current state of the engine; a step for detecting a load requirement for the engine; a step for determining whether or not the load requirement is beyond power generation capacity of four-stroke engine cycle based on the current state of the engine and the load requirement; and a step for switching a four-stroke engine cycle mode to a two-stroke engine cycle mode if the load requirement is beyond the capacity of the four-stroke engine cycle.
