Sintered body is made up of at least 70 vol% aluminium oxide matrix with 0.01-1.41 wt% dissolved chromium oxide with respect to the sintered body or 0.01-2.32 wt% chromium oxide with respect to the aluminium oxide. The body also contains 2-30 vol% corresponding to 3-79.1 wt% zirconium dioxide and/or hafnium dioxide in a grain size not exceeding 2 microns predominantly in a tetragonal modification. The zirconium dioxide and/or hafnium dioxide also contains 0.5-5.4 wt% yttrium oxide. USE/ADVANTAGE - As cutting plate for machining glass or glass ceramics. The tetragonal zirconium- and/or hafnium dioxide has improved stability in the matrix and simultaneously provides the body with greater hardness and wear-resistance.
