Wet purificn. of flue and waste gas (I) contg. SO2, NOx, H2S, CS2, organic S cpds. and/or hydrocarbons and opt. other harmful gaseous impurities involves: 1) first passing (I) through hot aq. HNO3 soln. contg. H2SO4, H3PO4 and/or Lewis acids at ca. 40-95, pref. 90-95 deg. C, with thorough mixing; and then 2) partial condensation of the gas-vapour mixt. leaving the reactor at 60-90, pref. 80-90 deg. C, the condensate being recycled, whilst the purified (I) is discharged into the atmos. After partial condensation and before discharge, (I) is condensed at a temp. below 60 deg. C, pref. below 80 deg. C and the condensate is sepd. Before it enters the reactor, (I) is freed from solids and hot (I) is cooled below 150 deg. C, pref. to 100-140 deg. C by mixing with air or N2. The HNO3 used initially contains ca. 0.5, pref. ca. 10 wt. % HNO3 and ca. 1.5, pref. ca. 20 wt. % H2SO4, H3PO4 and/or Lewis acids.
