Root attachment for composite turbine blade

A root attachment 2 (which may be of titanium or stainless steel) includes an insert 3 at one end thereof for integrally molding within a ram air turbine blade and has a hub connector 7 for connecting the blade to a rotor hub. The insert geometry (tapering width and flaring thickness) and surface area are such that a dual load carrying capability is achieved during molding by the formation of an adhesive bond between the material of the blade and the insert and also a mechanical locking. Both the adhesive bond and the mechanical locking are designed to fail above a predetermined load. The blade may be made from preformed sheets and molded in a compression mold. Details of materials used are disclosed.
