PURPOSE: A system and method for controlling air conditioner for vehicle are provided to maintain the interior environment of a vehicle comfortably by isolating the interior from the exterior of the vehicle through a selection of a window raising mode and an interior air re-circulating mode in case that pollution air is likely to introduce into the interior as the vehicle enters a tunnel or exhaust gas discharged from a front vehicle is likely to introduce into the interior owing to a traffic jam. The system and the method are also provided to ensure occupant's safety by allowing the operation to be performed automatically. CONSTITUTION: In a system and method for controlling air conditioner for vehicle, the system comprises an illumination detection unit(11) for detecting the illumination around a vehicle; a front distance detection unit(17) for detecting a distance form a front vehicle; a vehicle speed sensor(16) for sensing the current vehicle speed; a headlight driving unit(12) for determining the turning on/off of a headlight; a window driving unit(13) for determining the raising or descending of a window; an air intake selection unit(14) for determining an exterior air intake mode for sucking the exterior air into the interior or an interior air re-circulating mode for re-circulating the interior air; and a microcomputer(15) controlling operations of the headlight driving unit(12), the window driving unit(13), the air intake selection unit(14), if the vehicle is determined as entering into a tunnel or as being under a traffic jam.
