PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clean a magnetic tape without deterioration of the tape by incorporating a compd. having multidentate ligands with Fe as the center atom into the structural material of the contact surface of a cleaning medium to be in contact with the foreign matter to be removed. SOLUTION: A cleaning layer essentially comprising inorg. particles and a binder is formed on a nonmagnetic base body to obtain a cleaning layer. The cleaning layer contains a compd. having multidentate ligands with Fe as the center atoms. In the inorg. particles, >=70wt.% of the particles have <=6 Mohs scale hardness, and the surface roughness Ra of the cleaning layer is controlled to 0.008 to 0.012μm. By using the cleaning tape produced by applying A coating material with addition of the compd. having multidentate ligands with Fe as the center atoms, dropped particles of a medium can be enough removed and stains can be enough removed without increasing the polishing power. By using the cleaning layer, a chelate compd. with stains depositing on the sliding surface of a head is produced and the stains are removed from the sliding surface.
