PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device wherein the generation of a gap part associated with the phase change of a liquid crystal can be prevented. SOLUTION: A plurality of barrier rib parts 16 provided on at least one substrate 11b of a pair of substrates 11a and 11b and forming a prescribed gap between the pair of substrates can be contracted following the volume contraction of the liquid crystal 17 by forming the barrier rib parts 16 so that the elastic modulus E of the barrier rib part 16, the height L of the barrier rib part 16, the stress P generated by the volume contraction of the liquid crystal 17, the area A1 of the substrate 11a, the total area A2 of the barrier rib parts 16 coming in contact with the substrate 11a, the volume contraction variationΔVlc of the liquid crystal 17, the pitch D between the barrier rib parts 16 and the length H of the barrier rib parts 16 satisfy the relation of (1/E)×L×P×(A1/A2)>=ΔVlc/(D×H).
