Production of hydrofluorocarbons (I) comprises reacting (thio)acetals, (thio)ketals or ortho(thio)esters (II) with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF) in the liquid or gas phase in the presence of a catalyst. Production of hydrofluorocarbons of formula (I) comprises reacting compounds of formula (II) with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF) in the liquid or gas phase in the presence of a catalyst: R<1> = H, alkyl or aryl; R = H, F, alkyl or aryl; p = 0 or 1; M = O or S; R<2> = H, alkyl or aryl when p = 0, or alkyl when p = 1; and R<3>, R<4> = alkyl.
