PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a composite coating film, comprising coating an aqueous base coating on an article to be coated, coating a clear top coating on the coated base coating and then simultaneously curing both the coatings, by which the composite coating film that has controlled compatibility and inversion between the interlayer interfaces of the composite coating film under high humidity condition and has a high flip-flop property is obtained. SOLUTION: This method for forming the coating film, comprising coating an aqueous base coating on an article to be coated and then coating a clear top coating on the coated base coating, characterized in that the aqueous base coating contains a polyether polyol having a >=0.02 primary hydroxy group in the molecule on the average, a number-average mol.wt. of 300 to 3,000 and a water tolerance of >=2.0 and an emulsion resin obtained by emulsion- polymerizing anα,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer mixture which contains a (meth)acrylic ester having one or two carbon atoms in the ester portion in an amount of >=65 wt.% and has an acid value of 3 to 50.
