An umbrella enabling the safe and easy opening/closing thereof, characterized in that a protective tube (10) having a pull-down cord (21) is fitted onto a lower runner (1), a top spring (7) and a bottom spring are formed of chevron-shaped plates vertically projected to the axial direction of a metal rod (6), and both sides of the springs on the ferrule side and the at-hand-side are formed acute relative to the axial direction of the metal rod. In the top spring, the angle theta2 of the side on the at-hand-side is formed smaller than the angle theta1 of the side on the ferrule side. In the bottom spring, the angle of the side on the ferrule side is formed smaller than the angle of the side on the at-hand-side. When the umbrella in an open state is closed, the pull-down cord (21) is pulled in the at-hand-direction of the metal rod to slide the lower runner (1) in the at-hand-direction so as to bring the umbrella in a closed state. When the umbrella in the closed state is opened, the protective tube is pushed in the ferrule direction of the metal rod to slide the lower runner in the ferrule direction so as to bring the umbrella in the open state.
