The ceramic or plastic basin (10) is rinsed with water from a high-level inlet (16) opened by a bistable flushing valve (28), and is emptied (24) through a drainage valve (30). Both valves are connected by cables (38,40) to a sensing unit (32) with a stripline or slot antenna (34) in the cavity (22) behind the basin. A user's approach (A) and retreat (B) within a range of about 1 m produce signals in different channels for evaluation by a processor with memory containing typical valve operation timings. The sensing unit, located at the level of the rim of the basin, closes the flushing valve when the basin is full.
