A method and apparatus (10) are provided for controlling the signal strength of a channel ( lambda 1) in a wavelength division multiplexed signal that provides means to compensate for the wavelength dependent nature of the gain of optical amplifiers (24) and the attenuation of optical components in a telecommunication system. Monitors (30) are positioned after amplifiers (24) in the optical chain (23) to detect the power levels of the wavelength channel within the WDM signal. The value of the detected power is fed back to a power control unit (18) that compares the power level detected on the path to a theoretical value. If the power level is below a threshold value, the power unit increases the signal transmission power until the output achieves the threshold to achieve the necessary optical signal to noise ratio of the received WDM signal. |
