A device 21 permanently associated with a battery pack stores the time-related patterns of the actual charging and discharging currents, battery voltage, temperature and pressure and also stores desired profiles of these parameters, comparisons between the actual and desired profiles providing output signals ES which control a charger. The signals ES also includes data indicative of battery type. The device 21 may comprise a microprocessor 9, memory 10, analog/digital converter 11, comparator 12, temperature monitor 13, battery type recognition device 14, current measuring circuit 16, input/output interface 17 and a display 60. The charger may include decoders (30), (31), (Fig. 4), responding to the outputs ES to provide signals (S6), (Q6), (66), (EL) for selecting between fast, semi-fast, slow and trickle charging and signals (T1) to (T8) indicative of one of eight possible battery types. A further circuit (32) receives these decoded signals to insert an appropriate one of thirty two resistors (R1) to (R32) in series with the battery, and charging current device. Alternatively, charging may be controlled by thyristors, (Figs 8, 9), or by tap-charging on a transformer, (Fig 10). <IMAGE> |
