PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of generating an image having high color reproducibility and a high resolution feeling. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus has: a solid-state image pickup element 1 having a number of photoelectric conversion elements containing photoelectric conversion elements for obtaining color signals r, g, b and photoelectric conversion elements for obtaining a luminance signal (y); and a color image data generation section 60 for generating the color image data expressed by a luminance signal y' and color difference signals Cr', Cb' from a signal from the solid-state image pickup element 1. The color image data generation section 60 comprises: a signal interpolation section 61 for interpolating a color signal or a luminance signal that is not obtained from the photoelectric conversion element corresponding to each pixel position to each pixel position of the color image data to be generated; a luminance signal generation section 62 for generating a luminance signal yrgb from the color signals r, g, b at each pixel position for each pixel position subjected to signal interpolation; and a luminance signal composite section 63 for compositing the luminance signal yrgb and the luminance signal y for each pixel position to generate the luminance signal y'.
