Described is a process for preparing Amikacin wherein 1-N-(L(-)- gamma -benzyloxycarbonylamino- alpha -hydroxybutyryl)-3,6 min -di-N-benzyloxycarb onyl-Kanamycin A suspended in a suitable solvent, is treated with an aqueous solution of formic acid in the presence of a catalyst; the reaction mixture is charged on a ion exchange resin column to yield the desired product. Among the side-products Kanamycin A is obtained which is per se useful.
