To join a thread (20) spinning in an open-ended spinning machine (11) comprising a fibre-collecting surface (17), a card sliver (2) is fed to the card clothing of an opening cylinder (141), which unravels it into fibres (22), and fed in this form to the fibre-collecting surface (17). There the fibres (22) are tied into the end of a return thread, which is then continuously drawn off. The leading end of the card sliver (2) which forms one tuft (21) for joining the thread is fed to the opening cylinder (141) with a depth of penetration greater than the depth of penetration after joining, while the thread is joined in the usual manner in accordance with a reduction in the depth of penetration. The depth of penetration is reduced abruptly, to prevent thickenings at joinings. The process is carried out by a device (4) for changing the depth of penetration which is connected to, and controlled by, a control device (30).
