PURPOSE:To provide the star coupler which is suitably increased in scale and function. CONSTITUTION:Two couples of input optical waveguide arrays 18 and 28 and output optical waveguide arrays 19 and 29 are coupled through one slab optical waveguide 14, which has light confinment structure laterally to the travel direction of light, so two input light beams do not affect each other in the slab optical waveguide 14, the light from an input waveguide 21 is branched to an output waveguide 15, and the light from the input waveguide 21 is branched uniformly to an output waveguide 25 as well, thereby easily increasing the number of star couplers per substrate area. |
