LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE AND ITS MANUFACTURE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the coloring of display in both state of white display, halftone display and black display in a liquid crystal display device of a transverse electric field driving system. SOLUTION: In this liquid crystal display device, the polarization axis of one of an incident side polarizing plate 5 and an emission side polarizing plate 9 is almost matched with the alignment direction of a liquid crystal layer 10a and an optical compensation layer 8 having the refractive index anisotropy of a polarity different from the polarity of the refractive index anisotropy of the liquid crystal layer 10a is interposed between at least one of transparent insulating substrates 1 and 6 and the incident side polarizing plate 5 or the emission side polarizing plate 9 on the outer side. The direction of the anisotropy axis of the optical compensation layer 8 is almost matched with the alignment direction of the liquid crystal layer 10a including pre-tilt.
