PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a brush and a rotary electric machine capable of smoothly rotating with the brush, in which good rectifying action can be performed between the brush and a commutator. SOLUTION: One end part of the brush 10 is a slide contact side end face 10A, which is in slide contact with the commutator 28. A portion connecting both ends 10B, 10C in the circumferential direction (arrow P) of the commutator 28 in the slide contact side end face 10A along the circumferential direction, is defined as a curved shape along the periphery surface of the commutator 28, and defined as a projection slide contact face 36 projected inwardly in the radial direction of the commutator 28 from the other part in the slide contact side end face 10A. The slide contact side end face 10A is formed into a substantially rhombic shape, in which the width W36 along the axis line direction (arrow A) of the commutator 28 in the both ends 10B, 10C in the circumferential direction of the commutator 28, is smaller than the width W10 at the center in the circumferential direction.
