The valves (17) of an I.C. engine are each fitted with a device (19), fitted in the cylinder head (32) near the valve end of the rocker lever (5), to damp the valve closing motion. The device consists of a braking cylinder (20), in which a sliding braking piston (23) is fitted, the piston acting against the rocker lever. ADVANTAGE - A simple method of damping the valve closing motion without increasing the intertial mass of the moving valve components.
