PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid wrinkles when a magnetic film is formed on a base film by an oblique incident deposition method. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of a magnetic recording medium is such that a base film 7 paid off from a pay-off roll 2 is made to run along a cooling can roll 6 in a vacuum chamber 1 and, after a magnetic film with a predetermined thickness is formed of deposition magnetic material on the base film 7 while the base film 7 is brought into contact with the can roll 6, the base film 7 is taken up by a take-up roll 3. A magnetic film with a thickness thinner than the predetermined thickness is formed on the base film 7 in a very short period immediately after the start of film forming and a magnetic film with a predetermined thickness is formed on the base film 7 after the lapse of the short period immediately after the start of film forming.
