PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a butterfly valve, capable of being easily manufactured at a low cost. SOLUTION: In this butterfly valve, having a valve element 3 in a longitudinal passage 2 formed on a body 1, and formed by rotatably journaling the valve element 3 by a pair of upper and lower valve rods 4 and 4, and storing the upper part and the lower part of a lateral central part of the valve element 3 in slits 9, respectively formed on each vale rod 4, the shape of the valve element 3 in a closed state includes an axis line J of the valve element 3, the lateral central part stored in the valve rods 4 at its upper, and lower parts is inclined longitudinally with respect to a reference face K longitudinally dividing the passage 2 into two, a left part with respect to the lateral central part is located more to the other side at one of the front and rear parts with respect to the reference face K, and a right part, with respect to the lateral central part is located at the other part with respect to the reference face K.
