Cell contents are obtained from cells in vivo by transforming cells from a first state into a second state by subjecting them to stress conditions such that they are forced either to release cell contents into their environment or to synthesize cell contents in order to adapt themselves to the conditions of the second state; the procedure being repeated at least twice reverse stress. S,S-Alpha-amino-beta-hydroxyectoin of formula (I) is also claimed.
