PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anionic surfactant containing two chains and two hydrophilic groups, which has excellent surface activity and is useful as an emulsifier, a solubilizing agent, a dispersing agent, or the like. SOLUTION: The anionic surfactant containing two chains and two hydrophilic groups is represented by general formula (1), wherein X denotes an oxygen atom or an amido group (NH), R denotes a 2-20C hydrocarbon chain, and Y denotes a counter ion.
