The equipment scans transparent or translucent containers (2) moving on a conveyor (4) past an image acquisition system (6) which is linked to a grey-scale analyser and processor (7) with a control desk (13) and display screen (12). Three regions of the image (I) of the top and neck of each container are scanned for the presence of foam created by escape of liquid through an imperfect seal. One region is entirely within the neck, another extends from it through the normal level of the liquid surface, and the third is within the cork or cap.
