PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a composite material having higher formability and higher strength, in the producing method for composite material in which at least one kind of hard grains selected from the group consisting of boride, carbide and nitride are dispersed in a matrix metal composed of iron, steel or an alloy thereof. SOLUTION: In the producing method for composite material in which at least one kind of hard grains selected from the group consisting of boride, carbide and nitride are dispersed in the matrix metal composed of iron, steel or the alloy thereof, the average grain diameter of the above hard grains becomes≤15μm by melting the raw material powder with high density energy source and depositing the resultant material on the base material. The producing method for composite material is characterized in that the raw material powder having≤150μm grain diameter is melted with high density energy source and deposited on the base material.
