Antibody vaccine for autoimmune diseases

A method of treating autoimmune disease by generating an anti-idiotypic response is described. An animal or individual is immunized with a monoclonal antibody which is idiotypic for a T Cell receptor involved in the autoimmune condition. A specific monoclonal antibody F28C4 is disclosed. F28C4 was formed against the acetyl 1-9 amino acids of myelin basic protein (MBP). F28C4 protects animals against experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) regardless of the protein used to induce EAE. Since the immunization works well in a different species (rats and mice) including outbred populations, F28C4 has great promise as a vaccine for multiple sclerosis (MS) and other autoimmune diseases in humans.
