PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the erroneous detection of original size from occurring because of an installing position and installing environment. SOLUTION: This detection device is provided with an original sensor 18 detecting a light beam reflected from an original placed on an original platen 12, means 24, 33, 34 and 39 producing original measurement data at the respective scanning loci of the light beam based on a detection signal from the sensor 18 and a means 39 deciding the original size based on the original measurement data from the means 24, 33, 34 and 39. Besides, it is provided with a means 35 adjusting the receiving area of the light beam in terms of software.
