The method involves producing a pulse train by a pulse generator depending on driving speed of a motor vehicle and evaluating the speed from the pulse train. The number of pulses is counted within a given regular interval, and the speed is evaluated from the number of pulses within the interval using an evaluation device. The number of pulses is stored in a memory. The time duration between the pulse and an end of the interval is determined with the reduced driving speed. The speed is set to zero with an exceedance of the time duration between the pulse and the end of the interval.
