METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR OPEN FILE CACHING IN A NETWORKED COMPUTER SYSTEM

An improved local area network is described. The local area network of this invention contemplates the use of a file server and a plurality of remote terminals which include processing means adapted for local operation. In operation, assuming a particular batch file is not in use, a local workstation may load batch files resident on the file server for local processing. In this mode, the batch file is copied from the filer server and is locked from access by other workstations in the system. The file may then be executed or modified locally until access to the file is requested by another workstation in the system. Once access to the batch file is transferred from the workstation currently using the file, back to the file server where it is made available to all workstations in a sharing mode.
