PURPOSE: To accurately obtain the grain size distribution of a wide range in a short analysis time by measuring permeability in suspension liquid in terms of sedimentation time of lights having different wavelengths, and calculating the distribution. CONSTITUTION: Both light absorption function K and grain size distribution q3 (t) are obtained by formulae I and II from permeability measured value T (λ, t) at different light wavelengthλdepending upon sedimentation time (t), where K (πx/λ) is light absorption function depending upon substance,ρf is the concentration of suspension liquid,Νis the viscosity of the liquidρs is the density of solid particle, c is a constant,ωis number of revolutions per unit time of a centrifugal machine, r is the inner radius of a cuvette, and R is the radius of measuring permeability. For the wavelength i, firstΦ(λi, x)=K(πx/λi)q3 (x) is calculated from the corresponding permeability measured value. Then, K (α) is obtained from a formula III. Last, the distribution q3 (x) is obtained from K (α) andΦ(λi, x)=K(πx/λi)q3 (x). Thus, the spectral light absorption is measured during sedimentation capable of obtaining the distribution in the range of about 0.01 to 10μm.
