Described are open-pore bulk mineral materials, such as expanded clay, expanded shale, lava, pumice, perlite, brick chippings and mixtures thereof, on which immobilized microorganisms have been placed. Also described is an agent for removing toxic substances from substrates contaminated with such substances. In addition, a method is described by means of which microorganisms can be immobilized on open-pore bulk mineral materials. Finally, a method is described of cleaning materials contaminated with toxic substances.
