The present invention provides a crosslinkable prepolymer which can be used to produce crosslinked polymeric materials (or contact lenses containing the same) having a high strength and excellent durability. The present invention relates to a polyvinyl alcohol-based prepolymer containing a unit having a pendant 1,2-diol containing group and a unit having a specific crosslinkable functional group, as well as a molding using the same.

A polyvinyl alcohol-based prepolymer comprising at least one unit of the formula (1) and at least one unit of the formula (2): wherein each of R1a, R2a and R3a independently is hydrogen or an organic group, X is a single bond or a bonding chain, and each of R4a, R5a and R6a independently is hydrogen or an organic group; wherein Rb is an alkylene group having up to 12 carbon atoms, R1b is hydrogen or a C1-C6 alkyl group, R2b is an olefinically unsaturated, electron-withdrawing, crosslinkable functional group, and R3b is hydrogen, a C1-C6 alkyl group or a cycloalkyl group.
