<p>PURPOSE:To provide a postal matter address reading device which is capable of detecting an area to be read and the descriptive format of address information, if various pieces of image information other than information to be read on mail are mixed, and accelerating processing speed and improving reading reliability. CONSTITUTION:An observation part optically scans the image information of postal matter (p) showing a land mark which is previously specified on the both end parts of an address information descriptive line width together with address information in the same line as the head line of address information consisting of lines, to convert the image information to an electric signal, and this converted data is entered. A detection part 5 for the area dedicated to an address detects land marks from this entered image information and then detects the head line of address information based on the land mark detection results. A recognition part 6 determines a descriptive area for address information based on the detection results of the head line, and recognizes the address information by recognizing characters in the image information of the descriptive area.</p> |
