The invention relates generally to interferometers (5), and more specifically to techniques for stabilizing the alignment in a rapid scan Michelson interferometer (5) used in a Fourier transform spectrometer. Alignment circuitry and calibration system (50, 60, 70, 80) is used for a scanning interferometer. Phase shifts (fig. 4b) are introduced into the alignment servo to maximize overall modulation efficiency.
