An assemblage of particles having interconnected nanosized core pores in a nanoporous core with at least one nanoporous shell disposed about the nanoporous core, the at least one nanoporous shell having a plurality of interconnected nanosized shell pores, and wherein the particles have a cubic crystal form with facets and a mean distribution of particle diameters in the assemblage with a standard deviation of less than 15%, and wherein the nanosized core pores and the nanosized shell pores have a diameter between 1 and 100 nm.
