<p>A method and a device for paying out and hauling in the umbilical cable (5, 22) of a submarine device (2) from a ship (1) or a suitable platform are proposed, the umbilical cable being run out beyond the edge of the ship by the drum of a winch (6, 11) via a lower deflection pulley (7). To frictionally couple or uncouple the cable couplings (12, 23) of two umbilical cables, a pivoting device (9) is rotated about the axis of the lower deflection pulley or about an axis parallel to the lower deflection pulley from its vertical position into its horizontal position, as a result of which the pivoting device serves as a horizontal working platform for the coupling or uncoupling operation. After the coupling or uncoupling is effected, the pivoting device is put back again into its vertical position.
<??>The dimensions of the pivoting device (9) are such that the cable couplings (12, 23) of two umbilical cables (5, 22) can be lined up next to one another at a distance required by the necessary cable connecting lines.
