When excessive advance angle processing for advancing the ignition timing ahead of MBT is performed in the control system of a spark ignition type internal combustion engine, EGR processing for introducing EGR gas into the cylinders of the internal combustion engine is performed. The quantity of EGR gas is regulated such that emission of NO_x during EGR processing becomes smaller as compared with that when EGR processing is not performed (only excessive advance angle processing is performed), and emission of HC during EGR processing becomes smaller as compared with that when excessive advance angle processing and EGR processing are not performed. With such an arrangement, emission of HC can be reduced while increase in emission of NO_x caused by excessive advance angle processing is reduced.
