PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and a device for picture processing which surely and quickly retrieve a pattern, that consists of plural elements and that is specified by relative layout information of respective elements, from a picture and to obtain a recording medium where a picture processing program is recorded. SOLUTION: When a pattern M which consists of plural elements P1 to P4 having fixed position relations is retrieved from a picture, the picture processor first detects two elements P1 and P2, which give a maximum inter-element distance, out of elements and specifies positions, where the other elements P3 to P5 should exist, on the basis of positions of these two elements, and it is recognized that the layout pattern M exists in the picture if the other elements P3 to P5 are detected in these specified positions.
