A guide rail for an elevator, requiring a less amount of a material while achieving its desired strength, or, in other words, using a small amount of the material for its strength. The guide rail is formed in a substantially T shape in which a rail section is upright on a plate-like base. A guide body is engaged with the rail section to guide the vertical movement of an elevator car or a counterbalance weight. A recess is formed at the center of the bottom surface of the base, and the cross-sectional area of the recess is allotted to both end surfaces of the base and the top of the rail section.
