Pigments of the anthrapyridone series and the mass-coloration of artificial fibres

Polyacrylonitrile, acrylic copolymers, stereoregular polypropylene, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polycaprolactam and polyethylene terephthalate are spin-dyed in red to violet shades using pigments of the formula: wherein two of the Z's are hydrogen and the other two are groups of the formula: or where X is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl and Y is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl. The polyacrylonitrile and acrylic copolymers may be spun from a dimethylacetamide or aqueous alcoholic thiocyanate solution containing the finely divided pigment in dispersion. In examples (1) polyhexamethylene adipamide chip is coated with a mixture of a polyhexamethylene adipamide paste made as in Specification 839,712 and an aqueous paste of pigment and anionic dispersing agent and the chip dried, melted and spun; polycaprolactam may be similarly spindyed; (3) pigment and stereoregular polypropylene are ground, melted and spun; (4) an aqueous dispersion of pigment and anionic dispersing agent is mixed with finely-divided polyethylene terephthalate and coated on to polyethylene terephthalate chip which is melted and spun. Specifications 13686/07, 603,495, 847,959 and 895,657 also are referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises dyes of the formula wherein two of the Z's are hydrogen atoms and the other two are groups of the formula or wherein X is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl and Y is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, excepting 1 : 5 - bis - (31 - methyl - 111 : 911 - anthrapyridonyl 61 - amino) anthraquinone which is disclaimed. The dyes are made by condensing appropriate polyhalogeno-anthraquinones with aminoanthrapyridines or polyaminoanthraquinones with halogenoanthrapyridones.
