Prepn. of O,O-di:aryl alkane-phosphonates and/or O-aryl alkane-phosphinates comprises a Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction of the corresp. adduct of a trialkyl or triaryl phosphite, dialkyl or di:aryl alkane-phosphonate, or di:aryl or di:alkyl alkane-phosphinate, with an alkyl iodide (present in catalytic amts.), at 50-250 deg. C; such that the alkyl iodide is introduced in a stream of inert gas (e.g. N2), and the prod. of formula (R')m(R")nPOR (I) is opt. recycled. In (I), R is opt. substd. 6-10C aryl; R' and R" are each opt. substd. 1-20C alkyl, or 6-10C aryl or aryloxy; and m and n are each 0-2 with a sum 2. USE/ADVANTAGE - The prods. are valuable intermediates and solvents. The residual alkyl iodide is easily sepd. from the aryl esters on account of the large difference in b.pt.
