PURPOSE:To introduce a styrene into a side chain, by reacting a substituent group-containing aromatic compound having a hydrogen atom at the carbon atom of the alpha-position of side chain with the styrene in the presence of an alkali metal and a benzyloxy group-containing compound. CONSTITUTION:In introducing a styrene into the side chain of a substituent group-containing aromatic compound having at least one hydrogen atom at the carbon atom of the alpha-position of side chain, the substituent group-containing aromatic compound is reacted with the styrene in a molar ratio of 5-1:1 in the presence of both (A) an alkali metal and (B) a compound containing a benzyloxy group which may be replaced with an alkyl or aryl. Na is preferable as the component A, and the amount of it used is 1:50-1:5(molar ratio) based on the substituent group-containing aromatic compound. Benzyl alcohol, cumene hydroperoxide, etc., may be cited as the component B, and the amount of it used is 1:5-1:1 based on the component A.
