A system (100) and method for determining at least one quantitative parameter related to at least one unconstrained falling object. A feeding unit (101) allows the at least one object to fall through a chamber and at least one light source (106a, 106b) provides an incident diverging or collimated light beam substantially perpendicularly to the chamber. At least two detection units (108a, 108b) responsive to interaction between the object and the incident light beam track the falling object from different perspectives and produce successive location signals; and a processing unit (110) coupled to the at least two detection units and responsive to the successive location signals discriminate between overlapping images that belong to discrete objects and determine the at least one quantitative parameter.
