<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain a sulfur in a fuel gas from leaking to the down stream side of a desulfurization catalyst layer as the linear velocity of the fuel gas passing through the desulfurization catalyst layer excessively increases or decreases. <P>SOLUTION: This desulfurizer equipped with the desulfurization catalyst layers 9, 10 and 11 for removing the sulfur in the fuel gas by passing the fuel gas is provided with a change means for changing cross-sectional areas of the desulfurization catalyst layers 9, 10 and 11 through which the fuel gas is passed. Preferably, a plurality of the desulfurization catalyst layers 9, 10 and 11 having cross-sectional areas different from one another are formed and the desulfurization catalyst layers 9, 10 and 11 through which the fuel gas is passed are changed over by selector valves 6, 7 and 8.
