PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that it is difficult to connect character regions in which layout, such as column setting, is designated since the character regions are connected until titles and separators have been detected in the character regions conventionally. SOLUTION: By a control method of an image processing unit, an image region of an image for each page of image data over a plurality of pages is divided into a plurality of regions (S105), and meta information on at least coordinates, size, and types of each of the plurality of regions are held. As connection conditions, a direction for searching at least a region to be connected is set (S102). A region connection processing (S108) is executed for connecting two or more regions meeting the connection conditions in the plurality of regions of the image data to form one region.
