The invention relates to an electrode (35) for discharge lamps containing a metallic vapour. Said electrode consists of a high melting, electroconductiv e material, preferably wolfram or a material predominantly containing wolfram. The inventive electrode comprises a shaft (36) provided with a rod-type head part (37) defining a longitudinal axis L. At least one borehole (39) is arranged in the region of the head part (37), essentially transversally to t he longitudinal axis, especially at an angle of between 60 and 90~.
